On September 12th – 17th the
Heartland Chapter
hosted the ACBS Annual Meeting and the fourth
International Boatshow. This was a very special meeting as it marked
the 30th anniversary of the Antique and Classic Boat Society which was
founded right here on Lake George!
Lake of the Ozarks, cradled among the rolling mountains
in Central Missouri, hosts 92 miles of shoreline on a scenic 55,000
acre, man-made lake built in 1931 by the construction of the Bagnell
Dam.
On Wednesday, the ea rly
arrivals, our own Ken Tornvall and Ann Huber among them, were treated to
a Poker Run on the Lake. The 1st place winners, Chris & Bob
Braaf of the Rocky Mountain Classic Chapter, donated their entire
winnings to the American Red Cross to assist the victims of hurricane
Katrina.
Thursday, was the working day. We began with a Chapter
Roundtable, where over 50 ACBS members from over 25 chapters in the
United States and Canada had an informal discussion of topics including,
membership, outings, workshops, judging, fiberglass boats, meetings and
youth development.
After a short break, we commenced the Annual Meeting with
many new faces and more chapters joining the group. We then received a
detailed report from all of the Committee Chairpersons. Topics ranged
from Headquarters Operations, the Rudder and the Chapter President’s H andbook
to the Treasurer’s Report, Insurance and Legal issues. These minutes
are available on the ACBS website at
www.acbs.org Please take a look and see what the ACBS committees
are working on for you. The ACBS President’s gavel was then passed from
Jeff Stebbins to Jeff Rogers of the Water Wonderland chapter. The
meeting concluded with a heartfelt speech from retiring Past President,
Dick Sherwood of the Finger Lakes chapter.
Friday morning began with the boat owners putting the
final touches on their crafts as the judges scrutinized the 60 plus
historic, antique and classic boats which were docked directly in front
of the TanTara Resort. The afternoon program featured Carla Gernhofer
of Hagerty Insurance giving a presentation on “Insurance 101: Protecting
your Assets”. Carla’s presentation was then followed by the premier
of
“This
Old Boat” TV pilot which was very interesting and most entertaining.
Saturday was our last day to
take pleasure in the beautiful Missouri sunshine. We enjoyed Bob
Wilcox’s incredible Miniature Outboard display
and model boat collection in the hotel Lobby, followed by the
Women’s Clinic. Yours truly, met over a dozen women at the resort boat
launch and after a quick safety and maintenance discussion, each woman
driver backed the boat trailers across the parking lot and down the
ramp. Everyone who participated - completed the task successfully! In
the afternoon, we watched the Chris Craft Kit Boat Demonstration hosted
by Captain Jim Shotwell of the Chesapeake Bay chapter where a brand new
kit boat was constructed in front of our eyes. The Boatshow Awards
presentation followed with the “Boat of the Year” being awarded to Mike
& Becky Siegel of Seabrook, Texas with their 19’ 1939 Chris Craft
“Little Lad y”.
The final day concluded with a Silent Auction and Dinner where many
additional awards were presented.
The next ACBS Annual Meeting and International Boatshow
is scheduled for Lake Tahoe, September 12th to 17th
2006. Please be sure to keep in mind and mark your calendars for
September 2007 as the Adirondack Chapter will be hosting the 2007 Annual
Meeting on the Queen of America’s Lakes!
